Sia’s Music is the big winner/loser at the 2021 Razzies as it wins worst actress, worst supporting actress and worst director
Sia was the big winner/loser at the 41st Golden Raspberry Awards, as her film Music won three of the illustrious awards.
As is tradition, the Razzies have been held the night before the Oscars, ‘honouring’ the absolute worst Hollywood has to offer.
Considering the controversy it sparked due to its depiction of autism, it may comes as no surprise to hear that Sia’s movie Music earned three Razzies.
The awards ceremony named Kate Hudson worst actress and Maddie Ziegler as worst supporting actress, while Sia herself was named worst director.
Music came under fire after Sia cast regular collaborator Maddie, who is neurotypical, as the nonverbal autistic title character, and due to a scene where restraints were used on autistic people.
Things got worse after Sia lashed out at critics on Twitter, suggesting that an autistic actor who was not asked to audition may have been a ‘bad actor’.
Despite this, the film was nominated for two Golden Globes earlier this year.
Some good news for Sia, though, was that Music didn’t win worst picture.
That honour went to Absolute Proof, a documentary from American pillow magnate Mike Lindell alleging the 2020 presidential election was marred by widespread fraud.
Lindell also won worst actor for appearing as himself in the film.
While Borat Subsequent Moviefilm as landed a number of Oscar nominations, it also won two Razzies, but not for its main cast.
Rudy Giuliani – who appeared to put his hand down his trousers while in a hotel room with Maria Bakalova, who played Tutar Sagdiyev and was posing as a journalist – was given the worst supporting actor award for his notorious cameo.
The worst screen combo award also went to Giuliani ‘and his pants zipper’.
Worst remake, rip-off or sequel went to Dolittle, the box office bomb starring Robert Downey Jr, while 365 Days, the Polish erotic romantic drama that dominated Netflix last year, was awarded worst screenplay.
The Razzies even reserved a special prize for 2020, a year which proved calamitous for the film business, giving it the governors’ award for the worst calendar year ever.
Each winner earned a $4.97 (£3.58) statuette for their contributions, but nobody was there to collect them – which can be excused much more this year, due to the ongoing pandemic.
In the past, some stars have graciously accepted their Razzies, including Halle Berry, Dwayne Johnson, Jamie Dornan and Sandra Bullock – who, after accepting worst actress in person for her role in All About Steve, received the Oscar for best actress for The Blind Side the next night.
The nine categories were voted for online by 1,097 Razzies members in the US and about 25 countries, the group said.
The Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles in the early hours of Monday morning UK time.
