The Crown might be one of the most popular shows in the world, but Miriam Margolyes has no desire to tune in because she believes it’s ‘wrong’.

The actress, 81, happily speaks her mind on a range of issues (sometimes getting herself into hot water), and has waded into the debate about the Netflix drama.

While others have slammed the series for taking creative licence at times or recreating sensitive moments in the Royal family’s past, Miriam thinks it shouldn’t have been made at all.

‘I don’t like seeing people’s lives on TV who are still alive. I think that’s quite wrong,’ she said.

‘I don’t watch The Crown and I feel very protective about the Royal Family,’ she added while talking to My Weekly magazine.

‘They shouldn’t have their life made into a soap opera as they’re still living it.’

Since first premiering back in 2016, The Crown has centred on the life of Queen Elizabeth and her extended family, as well as capturing the world events that have gone on around them over the decades.

However, the most recent fifth season has courted controversy for recreating scandals like the breakdown of King Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) marriage, as well as scandals linked to his affair with Camilla.

It is also set to show the final moments of Diana’s life, with a camera crew spotted filming scenes of a car chase in Paris, while in recent weeks it was revealed that there would be scenes of her in an open casket.

While Miriam defended the Royals against the series, she did recently reveal that the late Queen once reprimanded her.

She recalled how the monarch told her to lower her volume, which understandably left Miriam a little taken aback, and apparently a bit embarassed.

‘It shocked me because I hadn’t quite realised how rude I was being,’ she said.

‘But it wasn’t deliberate – I wasn’t meaning to be rude.

‘I say what I think and I don’t care how it comes out.’

She added: ‘Sometimes it comes out in a way that people find very upsetting and offensive, and I’m sorry about that, but what I say is the truth’.

The Crown is streaming on Netflix.
