There’s a new immersive fantasy series for Netflix users to get stuck into, with Shadow and Bone ready to watch on the streaming platform.

The drama, which has been favourably dubbed by some as the next Game of Thrones, is an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s YA book series.

It follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), as she’s recruited to become a soldier in an elite magical army, known as Grisha.

As well as Jessica, it stars the likes of Luke Pasqualino, Archie Renaux and Zoe Wanamaker and has been a hit with critics since debuting on the streaming platform.

The official Netflix description reads: ‘Dark forces conspire against orphan mapmaker Alina Starkov when she unleashes an extraordinary power that could change the fate of her war-torn world.’

The series features a host of exotic locations – but where was it filmed? Here’s everything you need to know.

Most of the filming on the new Netflix series took place in Budapest, Hungary, with the production ending in February 2020 just before the pandemic hit.

Many of the landscape shots were filmed in the countryside outside of the city, while locations such as Buda Castle were also used in the show.

There was also studio work completed in Origo Studios in Budapest, while later shoots were conducted in October 2020 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The remote nature of the location work on the show was one of the reasons why star Ben Barnes turned down the role of General Kirigan at first.

Ben, who is known for his performances in The Chronicles of Narnia films and Westworld told Metro.co.uk: ‘I got sent one of the scripts to see if it was something that was interesting to me.

Speaking about the shoot, Ben added: ‘It’s difficult to uproot your life and go to Eastern Europe or wherever it might be in the world that isn’t your home for half the year, and you don’t know if you’re going to do more series.’

Ben went on to say: ‘I think if I’m going to do something like that, then I really want to have something I can get my teeth into and be involved in.’

Shadow and Bone is available to watch on Netflix.
