Warning: spoilers ahead for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

An incredible fan theory about Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) in Marvel’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney Plus points out a detail that shows how he has moved on from his violent past as the Winter Soldier.

Throughout the MCU’s Falcon and The Winter Soldier, all the way up to the high-octane season finale, one of the main aspects of the story was exploring Bucky’s mindset as he attempts to reintegrate back into the world.

Having spent decades under the control of Hydra as the Winter Soldier, Bucky was finally able to break away from the organisation’s mind control techniques while undergoing rehabilitation in Wakanda following the events of Captain America: Civil War.

In Falcon and The Winter Soldier, he is – understandably – still struggling to let go of the past as he tries to make amends with the guidance of a therapist.

In episode five of the series while helping Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) tighten a burst pipe on his family’s boat, Bucky mentions that he’s right-handed… prompting some viewers to investigate which hand he would predominantly use during his Winter Soldier days.

In the scene after Bucky uses his right hand to tighten the pipe with a wrench, Sam says: ‘Why didn’t you use the metal arm?’

Bucky replies: ‘Well… I don’t always think of it immediately. I’m right-handed.’

One fan shared several pictures on Twitter of Bucky as the Winter Soldier and afterwards, showing that as the Winter Soldier, he would often use his metal arm, while as Bucky he would opt for the right.

‘Bucky said he is right handed and doesn’t think about using his Vibranium left arm immediately,’ they wrote.

‘As the Winter Soldier, he used his left arm all the time when the opportunity came up.’

Another fan spoke about this significant characteristic in further detail, tweeting: ‘That meta of Winter Soldier using his left arm and Bucky using his right makes more sense now.

‘Winter Soldier knows it’s a weapon to use, therefore more reliable for combat. Bucky knows he’s right handed, so he uses his right simply because his subconscious recognizes that.’

In episode six of Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Bucky finally faces up to Yori Nakajima (Ken Takemoto) and reveals to him that he was the one who murdered his son while still in operation as the Winter Soldier.

Bucky had previously forged a relationship with Yori, taking him out for lunch while not telling the elderly man the whole truth as to why he wanted to spend time in his company.

After beginning the Marvel series on his own, waking up in his almost empty apartment sweating from his nightmarish memories as the Winter Soldier, Bucky ends the show spending time with Sam, his family, friends and neighbours in Louisiana.

With rumours of Captain America 4 and season two of Falcon and The Winter Soldier (or Captain America and The Winter Soldier) swirling around, we can’t wait to see where Bucky and Sam’s story takes them next.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is available to watch on Disney Plus.
