1899 creators have confirmed that the popular Netflix series has been given the chop after one season.

The mysterious series starring Emily Beecham and Aneurin Barnard, follows a group of European migrants travelling from London on a steamship named Kerberos to start new lives in New York City.

But their odyssey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on the open sea.

After that intriguing plot twist in episode eight, viewers were desperate for confirmation over a second series.

However, all hopes were immediately dashed after showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese confirmed that the show will not be returning for a second chapter.

‘With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,’ they penned on Instagram.

‘We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.’

They continued: ‘That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.’

The announcement didn’t sit well with devoted fans, with some of them hailing the shocking move as ‘the final f*****g straw.’

One fan begged: ‘PLEASE CAN ANY OTHER STREAMING PLATFORM PICK 1899 IM BEGGING.’

Why start a series on #Netflix if they’re going to cancel it after the first season. You’re wasting my time and you’re playing with the show creators. Especially when they have seasons planned out. please renew #1899Netflix #save1899netflix

Why on earth are Netflix cancelling 1899. I don’t understand there logic at all. Surely the writers can pitch the other seasons to another platform #1899Netflix

Nooooooo. I need to see what was coming next. 😩 This is why it’s a bad idea to watch new Netflix series unless they’re a runaway success. They always cancel stuff too soon. #1899 https://t.co/A5ktxRz3fH

What. The. Actually. HECK!!!! I LOVED 1899. I just knew it was going to be the new Dark. The diversity of characters. The twist at the end. So mad https://t.co/yRHPofN61y

Netflix recently faced the wrath of the public after Mike Flanagan’s young adult horror series The Midnight Club was also cancelled.

After premiering on October 7 the series’, which is based on a 1994 novel by Christopher Pike, viewing figures were considered weak, especially as it was released around the same time as the break-out hits Dahmer and The Watcher.
