Phoebe Bridgers announced the death of her father on Instagram on Tuesday with a throwback tribute.

The I Know the End singer uploaded an old photo of herself and her late dad smiling together in what looks to be a restaurant.

Phoebe, 28, sported bright pink hair in the tribute post that showed the father and daughter sharing headphones, but didn’t offer any additional information on her father’s cause of death.

She simply captioned the shot: ‘Rest in peace dad [sic]’.

The artist has spoken openly about her complicated relationship with her father throughout her career in interviews and via her own songs’ lyrics.

During a chat with GQ Magazine in September 2019, the American indie rock musician said that her parents got divorced when she was 20.

She continued to reveal her father had a ‘drug thing’ and had been abusive when she was younger.

Using her tracks as an outlet for expression, the singer’s Kyoto hit is famously about her dad.

Lyrics in the song document her frustrations with him as well as her uncertainty about whether she will eventually be able to forgive his past actions.

Phoebe is known to have said that the song offered a good opportunity to work through some challenging emotions she had surrounding her childhood.

The 2020 release’s lyrics told the story of an interaction with her father: ‘You called me from a payphone / They still got payphones / It cost a dollar a minute / To tell me you’re getting sober / And you wrote me a letter / But I don’t have to read it.’

Speaking with NPR, the star once revealed: ‘It’s nice to not feel, like, emotionally trapped all the time with stuff that you carry into your life.

‘Like, I think I was angry for a long time, and… the song is basically about, like, not being angry anymore.’

To the same outlet, she candidly reflected on her tumultuous relationship with her late dad, saying he was ‘emotionally unavailable, but very present in a weird way’, but explained – as she had grown into adulthood – she developed more sympathy for each of her parents.

The news of her dad’s death came after split rumours whirled surrounding the singer and her alleged fiancé actor Paul Mescal

Paul, 26, – known for his role as Connell Waldron in Normal People – was recently spotted on a supposed coffee date with Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie, 47.

Metro.co.uk contacted Phoebe’s reps for comment.
