An awkward chill fell over the Loose Women studio during today’s discussion about Prince Harry’s memoir, when Kaye Adams expressed her view that he’s a ‘strange race campaigner’ given his ‘history’ during a heated disagreement with Judi Love.

While the Duke of Sussex’s tell-all autobiography, Spare, is due to go on sale next week, extracts from the book have been leaked after it went on sale early in Spain.

The 38-year-old has also taken part in two new illuminating interviews, telling American journalist Michael Strahan in one of the conversations that he was ‘probably bigoted’ before he began his relationship with Meghan Markle.

‘I went into this incredibly naive. I had no idea the British press were so bigoted. Hell, I was probably bigoted before the relationship with Meghan,’ he said, as he looked back on when they first started dating.

In his book, Harry has claimed that his brother Prince William and sister-in-law Catherine ‘howled’ over the Nazi uniform that he wore for a costume party in 2005 which sparked huge levels of controversy.

On Friday’s Loose Women, Kaye remarked that she believes Harry is ‘exerting his privilege’, whether ‘conscious or otherwise’, because ‘the whole world is hanging on his every word’ while there are people in the country facing difficulties such as struggling to feed their families.

‘If this is a damaged guy, I have great sympathy for him and he should get help. But I think he also has to recognise to a certain extent the difficulties he’s faced, he also has enjoyed great privilege in his life,’ she added.

Judi then chimed in to outline how during Harry’s statements about his privilege, ‘he has said that his outlook on things as a white male in western society as a royal was different beforehand’.

However, Kaye took umbrage with Harry’s desire to still ‘want to be a member of a family based on birthright and class’, as the royal said in an interview that he still believes in the monarchy.

‘If he was really concerned about equality, he’d walk away from the monarchy,’ Kaye stated.

Judi emphasised that Harry’s discussion of his privilege was concerning ‘his experience with regards to racism that he’s seen because of his wife’.

Kaye then responded: ‘I would never contradict you on this Judi, because you obviously have lived experience, I must say he’s a strange race campaigner, I have to say.’

‘You think he’s a strange race campaigner?’ Judi asked, repeating her co-star’s statement with a look of surprise on her face.

‘Based on his history,’ Kaye added.

‘He’s learnt, and now he’s trying to say my eyes have opened to what I’ve been involved in,’ Judi remarked, as Kaye closed the discussion by expressing her belief that Judi is ‘very generous with him’, amid a marked silence from the audience.

On Twitter, one viewer described the debate as ‘heated’, while another dubbed Kaye ‘completely out of line’ for claiming that ‘because of his past he can’t change and understand racism’.

‘People can make mistakes and learn from them,’ another said in a tweet directed at Kaye, as one person wrote: ‘How will the monarchy change, if they are not being held to account? What nonsense.’

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
