Dermot Kennedy didn’t always believe Better Days were ahead of him as he revisits his blundersome past as a busker.

In an exclusive interview with Guilty Pleasures, the chart-topper recalled memorable mishaps from his stint singing for his supper on the streets of Dublin.

‘You have to have that nerve. You have to have that stubbornness to some degree… a thick skin,’ he began.

‘There’s so many situations you find yourself in. You’d turn up and the only spot would be across from a shop where you know the owner hates you, and there’s always an altercation.’

Then there was the time Dermot, now 31, feared he might accidentally, erm, decapitate passers-by – thankfully he didn’t lose his head about it.

‘It was a particularly windy day, and I had a sign that took off. It became this, kind of, fibreglass kite, and it was flying around the street. It literally took nearly ten people’s heads off!’ he exclaimed.

And the luck of the Irish wasn’t with the singer, who embarks on his European tour in March, when he was in the US.

‘I had a very depressing day in Boston once. I busked for about five hours, and I looked in my case at the end of the day, and I had an apple, and that was it,’ he sighed.

Did Dermot eat it? ‘I did, yeah. I’m fine, I’m [still] here,’ he laughed.

Fortunately, the fruits of his labour paid off, as last month he topped the UK charts with his second album, Sonder.

He’s even acquired an impressive celebrity following, and counts a certain Taylor Swift as a super-fan.

‘She sent me a really nice email a while back, just about music, you know, she liked my stuff. It was a nice interaction,’ he gushed.

Now that would be a collaboration beyond our Wildest Dreams…
