A Sabrina The Teenage Witch viewer is learning the hard way about late fees – and could face up to a year in jail for failing to give back a videotape of the teen series.

Caron McBride of Oklahoma, US, rented a tape of the teen series 21 years ago, and discovered she faced a prison sentence and up to a $1,000 (£720) fine for the felony.

Speaking on Oklahoma Fox, Caron explained: ‘I went to change my driver’s licence, during this Covid thing you had to make an appointment.

‘So, I sent them an email… they sent me an email and they told me that I had an issue in Oklahoma and this was the reference number, for me to call this number and I did.’

Calling the Cleveland County District Attorney’s office, Caron was horrified when she discovered she was wanted for ‘felony embezzlement’ in relation to the tape.

‘She told me it was over the VHS tape and I had to make her repeat it because I thought, this is insane,’ she said.

‘This girl is kidding me, right? She wasn’t kidding.’

Movie Place in Norman, Oklahoma, closed down in 2008, but the charge of felony embezzlement remained.

Caron insists that she doesn’t remember even getting the tape out, believing an old housemate may have rented it for his daughters.

But now that she knows the truth, she realised that it’s been a problem for a while, particularly when trying to keep a job.

‘When they ran my criminal background check, all they’re seeing is those two words: felony embezzlement,’ Caron said.

‘I didn’t try to deceive anyone over Samantha [sic] the Teenage Witch. I swear.’

The case has now been dropped, but Caron now has to fight to get it expunged from her record.
