Austin Butler raised eyebrows during his Golden Globes acceptance speech as his role as Elvis Presley appeared to have stayed with him.

The young actor received critical acclaim last year as he starred as the blues icon in biopic Elvis, having put his all into preparing for the role for years.

Admitting he woke up in ‘fits of terror’ in the middle of the night and barely saw his family as he worked on the movie, it was always unlikely Austin would forget about his time on the Elvis set any time soon.

But he also has a somewhat more permanent reminder, as it seems he cannot seem to shake the Elvis accent and voice in the almost two years since filming wrapped on the project.

Austin has already poked fun at himself for his lingering Elvis accent, including on a Saturday Night Live skit, and on Tuesday addressed it again after his Golden Globes acceptance speech for best actor in a motion picture drama.

The actor thanked the cast and crew of Elvis in his speech, as well as his loved ones and the family members of the late Presley, but while his words were touching it was the Memphis drawl that viewers picked up on, many taking to Twitter to question if they were hearing correctly.

‘Now why is Austin Butler still doing his Elvis accent?’ one person wrote, while another laughed: ‘Austin Butlet cannot shake this Elvis accent at all lmao.’

One joked: ‘I have never committed to anything the way Austin Butler has committed to the Elvis voice,’ and another asked simply: ‘Is this Austin Butler’s actual voice?’

Speaking to press later, Austin was asked about the accent and mannerisms sticking with him by Variety, to which he said he doesn’t ‘even think about it.’

‘I don’t think I sound like him still,’ he insisted, ‘but I guess I must because I hear it a lot.

‘I liken it to when people live in another country for a long time – I had three years where [Elvis] was my only focus in life. So I’m sure there are pieces of my DNA that will always be linked.’

The actor already addressed the accent change in his opening monologue for SNL in December, when he said: ‘There’s people out there who say that ever since I played Elvis my voice has changed.

‘That it got deeper, more Elvis-y. But that’s not true. I’ve always sounded like this, and I can prove it.’
