‘We compromise and communicate rather than have someone lead’: AB6IX on new album Mo’ Complete and the ‘circular relationship’ with fans
AB6IX are learning to ‘compromise and communicate’ to work together as a team rather than have one person leading them.
AB6IX (meaning Absolute and ‘6’ – five members together with one fandom) don’t have a member officially in the leader role – which is rare but not unheard of in the K-pop industry – so they are sharing the load.
Asked by Metro.co.uk if there was a member who naturally took charge, Dong Hyun said: ‘Rather than just having one leader who makes the decisions and stuff, we make sure to compromise and have as much communication as possible and make decisions all together.’
The boy group, Woong, Dong Hyun, Woo Jin, and Dae Hwi, are back with new mini album Mo’ Complete: Have A Dream, led by the shimmering funk of title track Close, the handiwork of South Korean producers Coach & Sendo.
It is worlds away from the more pop rock sounding Lululala on the same album, which is different again to the sweeping, ravey Merry Go Round.
Woo Jin explained: ‘As a team we always want to try many genres and I think we are able to achieve that through this album, trying more genres than before and a bigger variety of music than before.
‘It’s difficult to say specifically which growth we had, but we can definitely feel like there has been a growth in the group’s sound.’
‘When we first heard it I thought it was very fresh and new,’ Dae Hwi added. ‘It had its impact that we knew it was gonna do well, and just listening to the chorus was very catchy. We felt like it was a strong track.’
Woo Jin was keen to point out that there was no need to explain how much work went into the album as they know their fans, called ABNEW, will enjoy it.
‘We made the album for our fans, and whatever feelings they get out of it, I hope they enjoy it and give that energy back to us and that we’ll give that energy back to the fans,’ he explained.
‘It’s a circular relationship with have, feeding off each other’s energy.’
Of the album concept he added: ‘I think the last album had more of a message of giving hope and that people can be healed and cured by that, but this album is more about taking that hope as a stepping stone and going further. Trust you, trust me, trust us and becoming a bit more complete.’
Despite the pandemic bringing everything to a halt, the guys had a jam-packed 2020, releasing three mini-albums and online concert So Vivid, as well as a repackage album in January of this year.
For Woong the fact they have been so busy putting music out and creating this comeback as a group has been a plus.
‘I think it was a tough year for everybody,’ he told us, ‘and although we weren’t able to see our fans in person we have and still have a lot of stuff to show to fans so I don’t think it was too bad in that sense.
‘The four of us doing the choreographies together, practicing and stuff, those have been very special and good moments of us together.’
Mo’ Complete: Have A Dream is out now.
