Kanye West is said to have ‘demanded $1,000,000’ for one of his songs to be used in the Netflix series Lockwood & Co.

This week, the new detective thriller by Joe Cornish, based on the book series of the same name by Jonathan Stroud, is set to debut on the streaming platform.

The show follows a group of teenagers who set up a psychic detection agency in London amid an epidemic of dangerous ghosts in Britain, starring Bridgerton’s Ruby Stokes, Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati in the cast.

Ahead of the show’s release, Joe shared at a press conference attended by Metro.co.uk that they had been interested in using Ye and Kid Cudi’s song Kids See Ghosts, from the former hip hop duo’s 2018 album of the same name.

However, they apparently hit a roadblock when they found out how much money Ye reportedly wanted for the track to be featured.

‘Well, for years in development, we were using the Kanye West and Kid Cudi song Kids See Ghosts, which is a fantastic song,’ said the writer, who’s previous work includes Attach the Block and Ant-Man.

He continued: ‘But then we tried to clear it and Kanye asked for something like a million dollars – and we had to re-up it every year or something.’

Joe added that in light of the recent controversies connected to Ye, they ‘thought maybe that wouldn’t be such a good shout’ in the end.

The rapper recently received heavy backlash for making a string of antisemitic comments, as well as denouncing Black Lives Matter and expressing praise for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

In early December, Twitter CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Ye had been suspended from the social media platform for ‘incitement to violence’.

In October last year, sports brand Adidas ended its 10-year partnership with the musician, with the company saying in a statement: ‘Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech.

‘Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.

‘After a thorough review, the company has taken the decision to terminate the partnership with Ye immediately, end production of Yeezy branded products and stop all payments to Ye and his companies. Adidas will stop the Adidas Yeezy business with immediate effect.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Kanye West’s representatives for comment.

Lockwood & Co. premieres on Friday January 27 on Netflix.
