Charlotte Flair has revealed why she missed eight months of WWE action after initially taking time off for her wedding.
The current SmackDown Women’s Champion was written off television in May 2022 following her I Quit Match against Ronda Rousey at Extreme Rules, with the injury storyline set to give her time to tie the knot with AEW wrestler Andrade El Idolo and enjoy some time as newlyweds.
However, plans to get married, go on their honeymoon and then make a comeback were scuppered as she needed to give ‘immediate attention’ to some health issues.
The New York Post revealed: ‘She experienced issues that again needed immediate attention. So after her honeymoon, Flair underwent multiple dental procedures after which she could not risk being hit in the face for weeks at a time.
‘Flair said she probably could have been back for SummerSlam in late July, but stayed out longer knowing she still had one more procedure to get through’
She added to the outlet: ‘I had to. I didn’t have a choice but to take care of these issues.’
It meant Flair was out until the December 30 episode of SmackDown, when she made a shock return and confronted Rousey, who had just retained the SmackDown Women’s Title in a match against Raquel Rodriguez.
The Queen managed to convince her rival to agree to an impromptu defence right there and then, and less than a minute later she pinned her to win the championship.
Since then, she has become embroiled in a feud with Sonya Deville, which has seen the former WWE Official angling for a match of her own.
Flair could find out her WrestleMania opponent soon, with the winner of Saturday’s Royal Rumble match getting to choose between a match with her or current Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair.
As it stands, Flair doesn’t have a match herself on this weekend’s premium live event, but she’ll be keeping a close eye on proceedings.
WWE SmackDown airs Friday nights at 1am on BT Sport 1.
