Youtuber Lauren Chen believes Sam Smith’s Grammy performance was intentionally done to ‘upset’ Americans and ‘Christians everywhere.’
Sunday’s musical bash was a glorious night for the Stay With Me hitmaker, 30, as they nabbed the award for best pop duo alongside German trans singer Kim Petras.
During Smith’s performance, Smith performed their hit single Unholy with the stage lit with red lighting, dancers in metal cages and while Smith donned a red hat with horns.
Following the show, many branded Smith’s performance ‘evil’ and ‘satanic,’ however, commentator Chen told Piers Morgan that they did this to cause a stir with Americans.
‘People have said that this is a controversial move by Sam Smith, this is not at all controversial within Hollywood,’ she said during Monday’s Piers Morgan Uncensored.’
‘I want to be clear that Sam Smith did this specifically to upset the American right and Christians everywhere.’

Chen also explained that if Smith wanted to evoke a serious reaction he would have ‘come out in favour of traditional values.’
She continued: ‘Or heaven forbid, actually do something that’s critical of maybe Islam. That would genuinely be controversial but of course, that wouldn’t be popular….he’s not going to do that.
‘So in a lot of ways the safest thing, this is the safest thing Sam Smith could’ve done.’
Smith has been at the centre of backlash in recent weeks after the star was highly criticised for their latest music video.
Fans of the singer flocked to defend them from disgusted trolls, who accused the I’m Not Here To Make Friends music video of being ‘degrading’ to LGBTQ+ people.
With suggestive choreography and skimpy outfits, the video was a real spectacle, leaving some viewers astounded.
