Australian singer and The Bad Seeds and The Birthday Party collaborator, Anita Lane, has died.

No cause of death has been publicly announced. It’s believed she was in her early 60s.

The artist is best known for co-writing tunes including A Dead Song for The Birthday Party’s 1981 debut album, Prayers on Fire. She also collaborated on Dead Joe and Kiss Me Black with then-partner Nick Cave, before working alongside the singer with the Bad Seeds.

For the group she helped penned two of their classic songs, From Her To Eternity, and Stranger Than Kindness.

Despite her split with Cave in the 80s, she continued to work alongside the singer and appeared with Cave on Death Is Not the End, a Bob Dylan cover version taken from 1996 album Murder Ballads.

Throughout her career Lane also worked with the likes of Kid Congo Powers, Gudrun Gut and Einstürzende Neubauten and had a solo career which included 1993’s Dirty Pearl and 2001’s Sex O’Clock.

Tributes have come in for the artist, as the Guardian confirmed her death, with Cave’s wife Susie Bick sharing an image of Lane on Instagram.

‘Darling Anita, We love you so much,’ she penned on Wednesday alongside a broken heart emoji.

Accompanying the tribute were lyrics to Bad Seeds’ song Sad Waters.

Bad Seeds member Warren Ellis also shared a tribute from a Melbourne radio DJ to Lane.

Singer-songwriter Holiday Sidewinder wrote on Twitter: #Hearing her album “Sex o Clock” as a child made a huge impression on me and my music -obviously. RIP icon.’
