From The Son, featuring Hugh Jackman as a top New York lawyer who’s thrown into his own personal battle, to YouTube’s very own Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, there’s something for everyone – whatever genre it is that tickles your fancy.

Cons get complicated in this intriguing but implausible New York thriller. We meet various characters (including a great Julianne Moore) in episodic chapters. All their fates intertwine in Manhattan penthouses.

Hugh Jackman excels as a top Manhattan lawyer, whose new baby bliss with his younger, second wife (Vanessa Kirby, excellent) is interrupted when his troubled teen son Nicholas (Zen McGrath) moves in. The borderline sadistic ending is emotionally pulverising.

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On (PG)

The YouTube sensation – an adorable stop-motion-animated shell with one googly eye – gets his own, Oscar-nominated spin-off film. Plucky little Marcel (voiced by Jenny Slate) will warm your cockles.

Nostalgia

Persuaded by his Egyptian wife (Sofia Essaidi), a man with a hidden past (Pierfrancesco Favino) returns home to Naples. Here the experience of re-connecting with an old school friend, now a crime kingpin, reminds him why he left town.
