Selena Gomez has candidly opened up about the impact her lupus medication has on her body.

The 30-year-old star, who was diagnosed with the autoimmune condition in 2014, has revealed the medication means she holds ‘a lot of water weight’ and she decided to open up to ‘encourage anyone’ who is struggling.

In a video shared on TikTok, she said: ‘[When I’m taking it, I] tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally. When I’m off of it, I tend to lose weight.

‘I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going through, and no one knows the real story.’

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system attacks the body’s connective tissue, injuring, and in more severe cases, destroying vital organs such as the joints, kidneys, and heart.

It’s been known for those with lupus to experience weight fluctuations, as well as rashes, muscle pain, joint pain, swelling, and, in more serious cases, kidney failure.

The Only Murders in the Building star has spoken at length about her own experiences, and she insisted she’d ‘rather be healthy’ than worrying about people commenting on her body.

‘I just want people to know that you’re beautiful, and you’re wonderful. Yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s**t,’ she added. ‘But I would rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important, and I believe that they’re what helps me.’

Selena also reflected on her body image, insisting she isn’t a model and ‘never will be’ – and she only wants to foster positivity among her fans.

‘Not a model, never will be. And I think they’re awesome, mind you. I’m just definitely not that,’ she said. ‘I just wanted to tell you I love you guys, and thanks for supporting me and understanding. And if not, go away, ’cause honestly I don’t believe in shaming people for [their bodies] or anything.’

Meanwhile, last month the singer, actress and Rare Beauty founder responded to fans’ concerns after she appeared ‘unsteady’ in a make-up and skincare routine video, clarifying that her shaking hands were a result of her medication.

Living with lupus is far from all rainbows and light for Selena, and she gave a candid warts-and-all account of her reality in her 2022 documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.

‘In the morning when I wake up, I immediately start crying because it just hurts, like, everything,’ she said at one point, breaking down into tears.
