The head writer and creator of Marvel series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has explained why Spider-Man didn’t show up in the finale on Disney Plus, despite some scenes being set in New York.

While watching Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) go up against the Flag-Smashers in Falcon and The Winter Soldier, many fans were undoubtedly hoping some familiar MCU characters would make surprise cameos.

One superhero that some people might have thought could show up was Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, given the youngster is based in New York, where part of the final episode is set.

During a recent interview, writer Malcolm Spellman, who is set to co-write Captain America 4, addressed why the web-slinger didn’t show up, considering it could have made logical sense for him to be in the area.

Malcolm said that ‘of course’ there were talks for Spidey to appear in the action-packed show.

‘Then Kevin Feige [Marvel Studios president] tells you, “No. Stop it,”’ he told Inverse.

The showrunner continued, stating: ‘Listen, when you first show up to these projects, in your mind you think you’re gonna get to use everybody in the MCU.

‘But Marvel always asks, “Does this person belong in this story? You cannot just geek out and put all of our characters in your project because you like them. They have to occur organically.” So Spider-Man did not make it.’

Nonetheless, Falcon and The Winter Soldier was full of surprises, from members of Wakanda’s Dora Milaje joining in the fight to the mysterious Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) making her unexpected debut.

Following the show’s epic conclusion, many fans are wondering whether there will be a second season.

While season two hasn’t officially been confirmed, there are some who believe it’s been hinted at, especially considering the series has been submitted to the Emmys as a Drama, rather than as a Limited Series like WandaVision.

Furthermore, it’s expected that Sam and Bucky’s story may continue in Captain America 4, which was announced a decade after the first Captain America film was released.

Despite Chris Evans making his last appearance as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame, there is speculation that he could reprise his role at some point in the future… but as always, Marvel is spilling no secrets.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is available to watch on Disney Plus.
