The free new update to add infants, as well as just babies, to The Sims 4 has had some teething troubles.
A free new patch that adds a feature fans have been requesting for years should have been a moment to celebrate, but The Sims 4 Infant Update has turned into a literal nightmare.
Announced yesterday, the update overhauls how babies work in the game, so that they can grow into infants that can wander about the floor. That all seems to work fine but once a sim tries to give them a bath an animation glitch turns them into grotesque, Lovecraftian monsters.
Depending on the infant, the glitch causes them to explode into a mess of polygons that can look like they’ve got creepy tentacles or giant bat wings.
What’s most disturbing is that it’s not the infant itself that seems to be affected but a knot of virtual flesh on its head which, just like 80s horror classic The Thing, appears to be trying to take on human form.
It does seem as if the update could’ve done with a bit longer in the oven, as an entirely different set of glitches have been reported giving the infants bizarrely long legs, that makes them look like some sort of weird giraffe hybrid.

Apart from it involving babies, there’s nothing particularly unusual about the bugs, which are similar to many others from a wide variety of games featuring realistic looking humans.
Hopefully the issues can be fixed relatively quickly, but if there’s at least two different ones it might take a bit of time to work out exactly what’s going on.
The Infant Update was intended as a precursor to the Growing Together paid-for expansion, which is released today.
Whether that’s going to make the glitches better or worse remains to be seen but you probably haven’t heard the end of this yet.
