Capcom has discovered a Resident Evil 4 bug that can destroy all your progress, although it’s relatively easy to avoid.

Between its financial success and rave reviews, you’d be forgiven for thinking Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake is a flawless product. But of course, even the best video games aren’t without their issues.

Fans were quick to discover an issue on the PlayStation 5 version of the game where there’d sometimes be flickering lights at the bottom of the screen, something Capcom has already said it’ll fix.

Now, Capcom has issued another bug warning, and this one not only threatens to impede your progress but it’s present in every version of the game.

The good news is that it’s exceedingly rare. In fact, most players likely weren’t even aware it existed until Capcom pointed it out, since a quick Google search only brings up Capcom’s own warning.

Capcom knows what triggers the bug and has provided a spoiler free explanation, so players know what not to do.

After the beginning cut scene in chapter 12, while you’re still in the castle, you receive a key item and it is placed in your attaché case.

If you then attack with the knife before a notification for obtaining the item appears in the top right screen then the bug can happen. It causes the key item not to appear in your attaché case, thus preventing you from continuing the game.

Aside from requiring a very specific action, anyone who does trigger the bug, intentionally or otherwise, should be able to get round it by simply reloading their save file from before chapter 12. So, it’s not as if you’re stuck with a dead game.

A fix for the bug will be included with a future update, though Capcom doesn’t specify when that will happen. Ideally, it’ll come alongside the fix for that flickering light issue.

It also states that, ‘After the update has been applied, players will be able to continue the game even with the save data where the error previously occurred.’

Aside from that, there appear to be no other particularly dire bugs that players should worry about. Well, except these ones but they’re meant to be there.

Resident Evil 4 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
