It’s the biggest question hanging over Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, but is there a definitive answer about it having ‘proper’ dungeons?

As the release date of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom draws near, fans of the series are eagerly anticipating exploring all the sequel’s new features, which includes new abilities and the majestic sky islands.

However, Nintendo has been more tight-lipped than usual about revealing information on the game, and it’s still not really clear whether the sequel still has the shrines from Breath Of The Wild – or the old school dungeons which the previous game lacked.

Shrines took centre stage in Breath Of The Wild, leaving many fans disappointed with the absence of large scale dungeons. So, let’s see if there’s any chance they’ll be making a comeback in Tears Of The Kingdom.

While Breath Of The Wild fulfilled the dream of an open world Legend Of Zelda, some players felt the game would be better with the addition of more traditional dungeons, rather than the much shorter Divine Beast sections.

Instead, Breath Of The Wild’s depiction of Hyrule was filled with ancient shrines to visit, and while many had some very clever puzzles they were also all fairly short – there were just a lot of them.

There is a high likelihood that Shrines will make a comeback in Tears Of The Kingdom, as some observant fans noticed some suspicious-looking icons on the mini-map during lead producer’s Eiji Aonuma’s gameplay demonstration video.

You can see for yourself by stopping the video around the 7-minute mark.

While Nintendo has yet to announce whether dungeons will be returning in Tears Of The Kingdom, there are a few clues that suggest they will be present.

First, the latest trailer for the upcoming game shows Link undertaking challenges that seem to resemble the ones he’d normally do in dungeons.

A few scenes depict the series protagonist venturing into a cave, skilfully evading laser traps that have been installed on the walls.

Another features Link turning a massive wheel mechanism, which appears to be connected to a puzzle.

Of course, this is merely speculation, and we will need to wait for official confirmation from Nintendo. However, recent leaks also appear to support the idea that the dungeons will be more like the ones in the old games.

Information uncovered by dataminers includes references to Hyrule Castle, as well as motifs of fire, water, wind, electricity, and spirit, which seem to relate to a different dungeon each.

It’s likely that even more spoilers will emerge, whether dungeon-related or not, as Tears Of The Kingdom was leaked and pirated a week ahead of its official release.

For now, it’s best to take this information with a grain of salt, and wait until it’s go time to experience the new chapter of the Zelda series.
