Police constable Penny Lancaster feared intruder disrupting King Charles’ Coronation procession on her watch-Lucy Norris-Entertainment – Metro

Penny Lancaster revealed the real reason she didn’t take a sneak peek at the golden carriage while standing watch over the crowds during Saturday’s coronation of King Charles. 

The wife of Sir Rod Stewart, 52, is a Special Constable for the police and was tasked with controlling the public who gathered to watch the newly crowned king make his way back to Buckingham Palace. 

Following the weekend’s roster of festivities, the star appeared on Good Morning Britain to explain what it was like to be part of such a historical event. 

She was questioned over her role on the day by the ITV breakfast show’s presenters Ed Balls and Kate Garroway who quizzed Penny about why she didn’t look over her shoulder as the carriage passed by. 

In response, she shared: ‘I was very focused on my duties because at the end of the day, I wouldn’t want to have the wrath of the police force down on me – god forbid I turn round to look and that’s just that one moment when someone decides they’re going to interrupt the procession and launches themselves over the barrier and I haven’t been there to assist and take care of things.’

Probing her, Ed exclaimed: ‘So you didn’t even take a tiny peek at the royal carriage going behind you?’

‘Not directly behind me but of course you would look slightly left or right to see whether the carriages were coming,’ was Penny’s answer to his query. 

She continued: ‘It went past me twice so you would get a glimpse fo them approaching, but as they got closer, then it was eyes on the crowd.

‘Either side of me were military from the Royal Air Force.’

The mum-of-two went on to explain what it felt like to be part of such a momentous occasion: ‘Well, it was the most fabulous day and of course, tremendously proud and honoured to have been given that opportunity along with the City of London Police, who I am a Special Constable for.

‘Of course, we volunteer our time to help with the duties of policing and we are stationed on Whitehall right on 10 Downing Street, just behind New Scotland Yard.’
