Don’t go expecting a Silksong update at any of the summer gaming showcases, as the game has been indefinitely delayed.

It’s become something of a running joke for fans of Hollow Knight to expect/hope to see something new from its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, at a new games showcase. Especially the Nintendo Indie World presentations.

Expectations of a new trailer and launch date reveal were especially high this year, though, as during last year’s Xbox showcase Microsoft said that the sequel would launch within the next 12 months. So, June 2023 at the very latest.

However, the update fans have now been given is far from what they wanted to hear: Silksong is being delayed past the first half of 2023, so you can rule out a surprise launch this or next month.

Matthew Griffin, Team Cherry’s PR representative, dropped the bad news in the early hours of the morning, although it doesn’t sound as if the game is necessarily experiencing a troubled development.

If anything, Griffin’s comments are cause for excitement since Silksong has ‘gotten quite big’ and the team is excited with how it’s turning out so far.

As a reminder, Silksong was initially just meant to be a DLC expansion to the first Hollow Knight, but soon ballooned into a full sequel.

Hey gang, just a quick update about Silksong.

We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing. We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can.

Expect…

Grifin hasn’t gone so far as to say whether Silksong will still be out by the end of the year or if the extra development time means fans must wait until 2024.

‘We had planned to release in the first half of 2023, but development is still continuing,’ he tweeted.

‘We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can. Expect more details from us once we get closer to release.’

At the very least, this means fans won’t be let down by Silksong’s presumed absence during Summer Game Fest next month.

Judging by the responses on Twitter, most fans are, if disappointed, understanding about the delay and are okay with waiting longer to ensure Silksong is of high quality.

Nah I love this haha I much prefer it to being worried and anxious about the games development. “Oh shit it’s not cancelled is it?!”
Keep up the great work, team cherry. We’ll be ready when you are.

Listen, take your time. Take all of the time you need and then some.

Hollow Knight is one of my favourite games of all time, I am more than happy to wait. I’m sure it’ll be great, and well worth the wait.
