Halle Bailey has shared the life lessons that she has taken from playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid, a role that formed a major part of her life for almost five years.
The 23-year-old actress-singer was first announced to be playing Disney’s iconic land-loving mermaid back in July 2019.
She was previously best known as one half of musical duo Chloe x Halle with her older sister, and they earned multiple Grammy Award nominations thanks to their albums The Kids Are Alight and Ungodly Hour.
A mentee of Beyonce, she also appeared alongside Chloe in ABC sitcom Grown-ish from 2018 to 2022.
Now, Halle has joined the ranks of Disney’s princesses with her version of Ariel in Disney’s latest blockbuster reimagining of one of their animated classics.
Reflecting on what playing Ariel had taught her at the UK premiere of The Little Mermaid on Monday night, she told Metro.co.uk: ‘I think she’s taught me how to stand in my power how to be confident, how to know that I am worthy.

‘I credit her with really this transformative experience in my life. You know, when most people are going away to college during those years, I was filming The Little Mermaid, so it was my version of college – like a mermaid college.’
‘So I was happy!’ she added.
Halle, resplendent in a silver and white fishtail gown (of course) and matching headpiece, was joined at the premiere in London’s Leicester Square by co-stars Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Sebastian star Daveed Diggs, Flounder voice actor Jacob Tremblay and Simone Ashley.
Celebrity guests in attendance also included Stormzy, Stanley Tucci, Sabrina Elba, director Guy Ritchie and family and Love Island’s Tasha Ghouri.

Halle – who enjoyed a precious red carpet moment with original Ariel voice actress Jodi Benson at the film’s LA premiere last week has teased fans with her Ariel already, promising them a modern mermaid who wouldn’t ‘leave the ocean for a boy’.
‘It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life and what she wants,’ she explained to Edition magazine.
The Little Mermaid splashes into cinemas on Friday, May 26.
