Learning how to shield surf can save you valuable time when navigating the vast open world of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, so here’s how to master it.

While shield surfing is not a new addition in Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, it has become more enjoyable than ever. By hopping on Link’s shield, you can travel great distances and even ride along rails to get where you need to go.

It’s also beneficial to have an extra means of transportation in the game that doesn’t deplete you of energy, particularly since the stamina limit for both horses and Link can be quite restrictive at the start.

Shield surfing in Tears Of The Kingdom is a simple task, even though the controls differ from those in Breath Of The Wild. So, let’s see where you can get the instructions and learn how to shield surf.

Getting the instructions for shield surfing in Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

While exploring the northwest region of Hyrule at Tabantha Frontier, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for a hut featuring a small hole on its side. It’s located to the east of Oromuwak Shrine and south of the Tabantha Hills geoglyph.

Inside the hut, you will encounter a pair of travelers named Jogo and Yammo. Interacting with them will reveal that they had intended to meet a renowned shield surfer but were intercepted by monsters along their journey.

After talking to them, turn to your right and defeat the three enemies. This will fulfil the quest’s objective and grant you access to enter the hut. Inside, you will discover a spicy elixir, a traveler’s shield, and detailed instructions for shield surfing.

To initiate shield surfing, leave the hut and make your way to the top of any hill or slope, as it’s not possible to shield surf on flat surfaces. Then, press ‘ZL’ along with ‘X’ and ‘A’ buttons to have Link place his shield beneath him and start sliding downhill.

Although the process is straightforward, be mindful of potential obstacles in your path. Also, bear in mind that when Link reaches the bottom of the slope, he will automatically put away his shield.

Similar to Breath Of The Wild, shield surfing will gradually deplete the durability of your shield. However, it’s important to note that this wear and tear only occurs when surfing on rocky terrains, and not on snow or sand.

Through Link’s newly acquired Fuse ability, it becomes possible to combine various materials and objects with his weapon and shield.

A notable non-combat-related application of this ability is fusing a minecart with Link’s shield, resulting in the creation of a skateboard.

With the minecart-fused shield, Link gains the ability to move swiftly along railings and flat surfaces.

However, it’s important to consider that the durability of the fused shield will deplete at a faster rate than when you’re shield surfing.
