Exactly as the rumours predicted, this year’s new Mortal Kombat is a reboot and its CG trailer proves it’s going to be more violent than ever.

A franchise reboot called Mortal Kombat 1 will launch on September 19 this year, for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Switch – but not the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

All of that was leaked before the official reveal, which means we’ve learnt relatively little from the announcement trailer, which is pre-rendered and does not contain any gameplay footage.

It does have tons of gore though, so the squeamish should caution themselves. There’s also conformation that a number of characters from Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 will be returning.

Whether this technically counts as a reboot or not is open to interpretation because the storyline of the last game ended with the timeline being reset, so technically this follows on directly from that.

That immediately seems to lead to all the usual plot shenanigans, with Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, and Shang Tsung all confirmed to feature.

The trailer offers no real information on the game or story, but the official website is a little more forthcoming, with a promise of ‘a new fighting system, game modes, and fatalities.’

That’s pretty vague but there’s also something about Kameo Fighters, where you can ‘choose from a unique roster of Kameo fighting partners to assist you in battle.’

This is illustrated by the shot from the trailer of arch-enemies Scorpion and Sub-Zero apparently working together, so the implication seems to be that you can make any character, no matter who they are, an assist fighter.

No doubt we’ll learn more soon, likely at the various summer preview events next month, or perhaps the PlayStation showcase next week. Although so far there’s no sign of any exclusivity for the game.

There is a pre-order bonus though, where you get a playable Shang Tsung and beta access. Pre-orders will begin on Friday, May 19 at 6pm BST.

Update:

Warner Bros. has announced that the first DLC Kombat Pack will add a Johnny Cage character that looks like Jean-Claude Van Damme, which will be available at launch.

Although Van Damme has no direct connection with the franchise, Mortal Kombat started off as a tie-in to his 1992 film Universal Soldier. Johnny Cage was then created as a parody of him.

The DLC will also give early access to six new, but unnamed, playable characters, and five new Kameo Fighters.

There’s no mention yet of Peacemaker or Homelander, although both have been rumoured as future DLC.
