A third suspect has been charged over the murder of Jam Master Jay.

Run-DMC legend Jason ‘Jay’ Mizell was shot dead inside his New York recording studio on October 30, 2002 at the age of 37.

Three years after two other suspects were identified, Jay Bryant has been accused of also being involved in his death.

He was reportedly already in custody on unrelated drug charges on Tuesday when prosecutors filed an indictment in Brooklyn, to charge him in connection with the shooting.

‘The charges were only revealed yesterday,’ his attorney, César de Castro, told People Magazine in a statement. ‘Mr Bryant will plead not guilty.

‘We remain confused why, after more than 20 years and charging two individuals three years ago, does the government now allegedly think that they have sufficient evidence to charge Mr Bryant.’

According to multiple outlets, prosecutors alleged that Bryant and two other suspects were seen entering the building before the shooting, and later spotted fleeing.

They also claimed that his DNA was recovered at the scene.

‘Securing an indictment in a secret grand jury, applying an extremely low burden of proof, is one thing,’ Castro told AP after the charges were revealed. ‘Proving it at trial is another matter.’

The update comes after Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan Jr were indicted on charges of murder while engaged in drug trafficking in relation to Mizell’s death in August, 2020, according to the New York Times.

Mizell was killed in Queens in 2002, with police stating at the time that he was shot once in the head at point-blank range by a masked assailant.

The musician joined Run-DMC in 1982 along with Joseph ‘Run’ Simmons and Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels.

The group were regarded as one of the most influential rap groups in history with hits like Walk This Way, Rock Box, It’s Tricky and King of Rock.

They enjoyed global success in the 1980s but eventually disbanded after his death.
