Fear The Walking Dead airs cruel and heart-breaking episode in time for Mother’s Day
*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Fear The Walking Dead season six, episode 12.
Fear The Walking Dead fans have been left reeling after this weekend’s episode delivered devastating scenes just in time for Mother’s Day.
Although the special day has been and gone in the UK – don’t worry – for US viewers, Sunday’s edition of the hit show landed on the date they celebrate mums, and plenty of viewers were understandably distraught.
In incredibly emotional scenes, pregnant former power plant worker Grace (Karen David) saw what she believed to be visions of the future as her mind created a 16-year-old Athena (Sahana Srinivasan) to help her awaken and give birth to her girl.
In the dream, they both battle ‘living’ walkers as Grace tries to wake up so her daughter can be born and reunited the splintered survivors.
She believes Athena to be ‘the future’, but once Morgan (Lennie James) delivers the baby, she is stillborn.
Roy Orbison’s In Dreams – which shares a name with the episode – is playing on Grace’s Walkman, and there is a heart-breaking moment she realises the grave reality of the situation.

She said: ‘What I saw… they weren’t my last moments. They were hers. I thought it was going to be different. But it was just a dream. It was just a dream.’
Not surprisingly, viewers were devastated by the scenes, particularly as people across the US celebrated Mother’s Day.
One fan wrote: ‘Thanks for ruining Mother’s Day #FearTWD #FearTheWalkingDead I really must just need to punish myself watching at this point (sic)’
Another added: ‘@KarenDavid saying “I thought it was going to be different but it was just a dream” was probably the most heartbreaking words ever spoken on #FearTWD. (sic)’
A different viewer tweeted: ‘#FearTWD did this have to air on Mothers Day? So heartbreaking (sic)’
Co-showrunner Ian Goldberg has weighed in on the emotional scenes, including the use of In Dreams.
He said on Fear The Walking Dead: Episode Insider: ‘For Grace to be listening to that, she’s manifesting this idea that ‘all I have to do is get through this, and then that dream can happen”…
‘And of course, the devastating part is everything she experiences is ultimately only a dream, and that none of it’s going to come to pass in reality… Grace knows from her experience working in the power plant that often pregnant moms, the radiation exposure they have will go to the baby.
‘And it was something that she believed based on the dream that maybe it was the opposite, where she absorbed it all and the baby didn’t get it. You know, her initial instinct turned out to be right.’
Fear the Walking Dead airs Mondays at 9pm on AMC in the UK.
