MasterChef UK viewers recoiled in horror when a cook dismembered a crab live on air.
The ‘barbaric’ moment happened during Wednesday’s penultimate episode which saw Terri, Chariya, Anurag and Omar fight tooth and nail for a spot in the final.
Overseen by judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace, the four talented chefs were tasked with creating a special lunch at Clare Smyth’s three-Michelin-stared Core for a select group of iconic cooks, including Tom Kitchin and Jonny Lake.
In a bid to impress the leading culinary figures, Anurag created an array of dishes made from crab, including a fresh crab salad with sabayon.
Anurag said he was preparing crab for the first time in his life as he twisted and ‘ripped’ the legs and claws off the crustacean and popped them in the oven to steam.

However, the moment has not gone down well with some BBC viewers, with one remarking the crab was ‘definitely moving’ before being cooked, branding it ‘barbaric.’
Another shocked viewer commented: ‘D-did they just rip a crab alive?? disgusting #masterchef,’ while a third added: ‘#MasterChef @BBC did I really just see one of the chefs rip the claws and legs off a live crab? Please tell me I’m wrong..’
A particularly gruntled audience member said they had complained to the Line of Duty broadcaster over the scene on the grounds of ‘animal cruelty.’
Despite upsetting some viewers, Anurag made it through to the final, with Terri leaving the show after failing to impress with her steak and chips.
Terri admitted she was ‘gutted’ to be going home, but was thinking positively.
‘Without this competition, I wouldn’t have reached the level of cook I am now for years to come. It pushes you to be the best.’
