Fashion fan reveals why black jeans are always a smaller fit – and people’s minds are totally blown

SIZING in stores can be frustrating, especially when it seems to be different from shop to shop.

And one fashion fan was left very confused when a pair of black denim shorts were too small – while the exact same ones in blue were a perfect fit.

Rachel Spicer, from Falkirk, had picked up both pairs in a size 20 from PrettyLittleThing.

The 25-year-old regularly shares her clothing hauls and outfit choices with her 2.3 million followers on TikTok (@rachelspicer_).

In a recent clip, she revealed she’s finally found the dream pair of denim shorts to suit her figure – and they’re only £20.

Rachel, usually a size 18, sized up with a size 20 in the high-waisted blue shorts.

She said: “I find shorts really hard to fit because I need an 18 or 20 but then I also don’t have a bum so they’re just really baggy here.

“But these are cool. I feel there’s room to be bloated in because I’m thinking I might wear these to a festival and I’m going to be drinking cider, and cider makes me bloat.”

It was a different story, however, when she tried on the exact same pair in black.

“These shorts seem a little bit tighter, even though they’re the same size”, she said.

“They don’t seem to have as much movement, and I need movement.”

Fashion fans were quick to reassure Rachel that this is normal with black denim, and explained the reason behind it.

One revealed: “Black denim is always slightly smaller to blue denim in the same size cause of the extra black dye, so I always size up in black denim.”

A second wrote: “Heads up lovely, black denim is always smaller as the dye affects the denim.”

And a third agreed: “Black denim will always fit more snug due to the dye process and wash.”

Thankful for the tip, Rachel replied: “Ahhhh that makes sense! Will do this next time.”

And she wasn’t the only fashionista who didn’t know this about denim as another said: “That is really good to know actually.”

Meanwhile, someone else gushed: “You’re an angel for this info thank you.”
