At any awards ceremony, eagle-eyed viewers are always curious to see how nominees will react if they miss out on the win.

As anyone who’s watched Friends knows, learning how to perfect your ‘gracious loser face’ can be key (thanks for the tip Rachel).

So, with all eyes on the stars recognised at last night’s Tony Awards in New York City, several people couldn’t help but notice the deadpan expression on Samuel L Jackson’s face when the camera zoomed in on him as the winner of his category was revealed.

The 74-year-old received a nod for best performance by a featured actor in a play for his role in The Piano Lesson as Doaker Charles, going up against Brandon Uranowitz, Jordan E Cooper, Arian Moayed and David Zayas.

In the end, Brandon took home the prize for his performance as Ludwig Jakobovicz and Nathan Fischbein in Leopoldstadt, marking the 36-year-old’s first win and fourth nomination at the Tony Awards.

While the other nominees all smiled and clapped as the winner was announced, the Secret Invasion star appeared motionless for a few moments, before gradually joining in with the applause.

One person shared a screenshot of Samuel’s reaction on Twitter, writing: ‘Samuel L. Jackson’s face is taking me out for some reason! 😂.’

Someone else added: ‘Samuel L. Jackson’s face took me all the way out 😭😭😭.’

Nonetheless, the actor looked like he was in high spirits while walking the red carpet with his wife, actress LaTanya Richardson.

This year’s ceremony marked the first time that Samuel had ever been nominated for a Tony Award.

He’s received a plethora of other awards and nominations throughout his career, including being nominated at the Oscars in 1996 for his iconic performance in Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic Pulp Fiction.

In 2022, he received an Honorary Academy Award, a recognition that has previously gone to stars including Charlie Chaplin, Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, Sir Alec Guinness, Robert Redford and Jackie Chan.
