Michaela Coel is now in talks to make another series of the blistering I May Destroy You, according to reports.

The 12-part drama based on Coel’s own experience of sexual assault was easily one of the most prolific and note-worthy dramas of 2020, shaping the conversation around consent through various perspectives.

In turn, I May Destroy You has picked up eight Bafta nominations after being shamefully snubbed at the Golden Globes earlier this year.

After HBO boss Casey Bloys shut down hopes for a second series, The Sun has reported Coel – who wrote, directed and starred in I May Destroy You – is in discussions with BBC to bring the show back in some form and could even be broadcast in 2022.

Bloys previously told Hollywood Reporter: ‘On I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel is thinking about what she wants to do next.

‘I don’t think there’s going to be another I May Destroy You, there’s no season two coming. But she’s thinking about what she wants to do next and hopefully we’ll be lucky enough to be partner with her again.’

I May Destroy You follows author and semi-influencer Arabella who tries to rebuild her life after being raped on a night out.

Coel wrote the script after being inspired by her own sexual assault, which took place when she starred in E4 comedy Chewing Gum.

Like Arabella, Coel had her drink spiked and was only aware of the attack after being stung by flashbacks.

Few shows have received more acclaim and made such an impact, with I May Destroy You clearing up all the award nominations this season.

I May Destroy You is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
