BBC News viewers distracted by awkward blunder during live report-Meghna Amin-Entertainment – Metro

BBC News viewers were left distracted during a live report on Tuesday by something going on in the background.

Recent weeks have seen plenty of gaffes occur at the broadcaster, including the likes of newsreaders they’re not realising they’re still on air, and technical issues leaving the studio in darkness.

However, during Ben Brown’s News at One, it was someone trying to capture a picture on their phone in the background that caught people’s eyes.

He had been discussing the deaths of three people killed in a ‘major incident’ in Nottingham, including 19-year-old student Grace Kumar and 19-year-old cricket player Barnaby Webber.

However, before the clip cut to a recorded account, viewers in the studio saw a figure appear behind Ben, and try to capture the BBC newsroom on her phone camera.

Clearly unaware she was on live TV, the lady in the background held her phone above the newsroom and snapped a shot.

‘Go ahead and take that picture. No one will notice,’ one viewer joked.

Another commented: ‘The things that go on behind you @BenBrownBBC.’

Despite being unaware of what was going on behind him, Ben is no stranger to awkward mishaps during live coverage, having left us all in hysterics when his yawn was caught on camera.

The journalist had been covering news in December 2020 when he let out a huge yawn as a news items on bagpipes played, however, his timings were slightly off.

As a result, Ben, who was sunk back in his chair, still had his mouth wide open as the show returned to him in the studio – and he was a little flustered when he realised his mistake.

‘Caught out there,’ he chuckled.

Ben apologised Twitter shortly after the mishap, writing: ‘Apologies for this dear viewers – I was at the end of a long shift after a 5am start when the director cut to me by mistake. The perils of live TV!’
