Madonna was pushing herself to the max right up until her shock hospitalisation with a ‘serious bacterial infection’, it has been claimed.

The superstar’s tour has been postponed after the 64-year-old was found unresponsive and rushed to intensive care, with family ‘preparing for the worst’.

She was in intensive rehearsals for her Celebration Tour at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum and a source said the Queen of Pop was working for ’12-hour days’ on the greatest hits set.

‘She had been putting in 12-hour days. She was strenuously rehearsing and putting in the work,’ an insider told Page Six.

Madonna is believed to have caught the infection on June 24, although she had to be intubated and is still under medical care, she is said to be ‘improving’.

Her tour was set to start on Saturday, July 15, visiting arenas across America before coming to Europe and the UK later this year.

Leon Lourdes, 26, daughter of the Vogue hitmaker is thought to have been by her side throughout the whole ordeal.

Understandably, the tour has now been postponed and Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary, 50, shared an update with fans through Instagram on Wednesday.

‘On Saturday June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several day stay in the ICU,’ he wrote.

‘Her health is improving, however, she is still under medical care.’

Guy reassured fans that Madonna’s team expected her to make a ‘full recovery’, but stated they were pausing ‘all commitments’ until the star is feeling better.

This included her almost sold-out Celebration tour, which the Material Girl singer was about to embark on.

He also promised fans more information and rescheduled tour dates would follow soon, adding: ‘We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.’

Madonna was treated at a New York City hospital on Saturday, according to Page Six.

A source claimed she was intubated for at least one night before having the tube removed, but is now ‘alert and recovering’.

Madonna announced earlier this year she would launch her Celebration tour in honour of the 40th anniversary of her music career.

The star rose to fame in 1983 with her hit Holiday, which stormed the US Billboard Hot 100, and has since gone on to have numerous hits and is the bestselling female music artist of all time.

Last July, Madonna shared that being on stage was her ‘happy place’ and she was a ‘creature of the stage’.

Her 84-date global shows were due to kick off on 15 July at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, and she has been regularly updating fans by sharing images and videos from her rehearsals online.

In one of her latest recent set of snaps on Instagram showing her preparing for the Celebration gigs, mum-of-six Madonna said: ‘Calm before the storm… .’
