It’s been 10 years since Payday 2 and while there’s a lot of anticipation for the sequel you probably shouldn’t expect any radical change.

It’s out in under three months’ time but so far we’ve seen very little of Payday 3, despite the fact that it’s been so long since the last game, and some people might need their hype meters recharging.

Developer Overkill Software managed to go the whole of last year without showing anything of the game and while we did get a small update earlier in the year, and a spot during the Xbox Games Showcase, there’s still been very little footage or info.

There is now though as a Vietnamese content creator has leaked 18 minutes of unbroken footage online and… apart from the improved graphics it’s kind of a game of spot the difference.

Even the new graphics don’t make that much impact, as it just ends up looking like how you remember the last game – but they are definitely better.

We can’t show the footage here for legal reasons but it’s very easy to find with a quick google, with publisher 505 Games so far having made no obvious effort to remove it.

The player is taking part in a bank heist that very quickly goes wrong, while talking to other players online. That suggests they’re part of some kind of closed beta test or perhaps part of the QA team.

It may be the latter as he talks about there being eight heists and that more will be added later as DLC. He also talks about the existing custody feature being in the new game, where you can exchange hostages for arrested players.

There seems to be a new handler but other than that everything seems to be largely the same, including some pretty unimpressive enemy AI. Even the crew are the same, from the first game, including Dallas, Wolf, Chains, and Hoxton.

But while Payday 2 was 2013, development of this sequel only started relatively recently. In the interim Overkill have been making DLC for the last game, and the ill-fated Overkill’s The Walking Dead, so only a fraction of that time has been spent on Payday 3.

That does kind of show in the footage, but you’ll be able to judge it yourself when Payday 3 is released on September 21 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
