PS5 Slim will be cheaper and smaller and out this year says Microsoft-GameCentral-Entertainment – Metro

A newly spotted detail from Microsoft’s court documents reveals they think the PS5 Slim will be out this year for just $399.

The Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 will be three years old this Christmas and by that point in a console’s lifetime you’d usually expect to start to seeing new hardware models. For non-Nintendo consoles that’s usually either a slim version of the original model or equivalents to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

There have been whispers of a PS5 Pro and new Xbox but surprisingly very little about a PS5 Slim – the general name given to a PlayStation console revision that is smaller than the original version but otherwise largely the same.

There have been rumours about a new model of PlayStation 5, with a detachable hard drive, which may fill the same basic purpose of a PS5 Slim, but up until now there’s only been one source for it. But now it seems you can add Microsoft as a secondary source.

As you might guess, the revelation comes from documents that Microsoft has submitted for its legal battle with the Federal Trade Commission, where it claims that Sony will release a PS5 Slim model later in 2023, for a price of $399.

That’s the same price as the disc-less Digital Edition in the US (the Digital Edition is £389 here but the US never had the same price rise that the rest of the world did).

Assuming the PS5 Slim does have a disc drive that would essentially be a price reduction, even if it just goes back to what the standard PlayStation 5 was at launch in the UK.

‘PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point,’ reads the Microsoft court document.

Microsoft doesn’t explain how they know this, or how they know the Project Q handheld is going to be under $300, so it’s hard to know how much credence to give their comments.

It wouldn’t be the first time they said something about Sony’s plans that was later proven wrong, like the time they said Marvel’s Wolverine was out on PlayStation 5 this year.

They’ve even got details about their own line-up wrong, like the time they said the sequel to Skyrim was called The Elder Scrolls 16.

In this case, it could be that Microsoft is referring to the detachable hard drive rumours and that it’s relying on internet scuttlebutt the same as everyone else, but it seems an odd thing to be so adamant about in terms of the cost.

At the moment the only thing to do is wait and see what Sony announces, but if Microsoft is proven right then how they knew becomes an even bigger question.
