Martin Compston has said he will be ‘heartbroken’ if there’s not a Line of Duty series 7 after reaction to the reveal of H divided fans like a sequel to Brexit.

The 37-year-old has played Steve Arnott for six series and the man determined to make waistcoats a look outside of a local snooker hall has been a part of the Scottish actor’s life for the last decade.

Naturally then he’s not quite ready to let Steve go just yet.

Admitting he understood the divisive reaction to the series six finale, in which dopey Ian Buckells was revealed to the final piece to the puzzle that is H, Martin told ES magazine: ‘You’ve got to respect people have invested so much in this thing and everybody has a different version of their ending, but yes… it’s been a pretty wild few days,’ adding he knew there would be ‘riots’ if the mystery hadn’t been solved in the latest run.

However, discussing the possibility of another series, which the superfans have many ideas about, Martin still has no idea if we’ll see Steve, Kate Fleming and Ted Hastings back in action ever again.

‘ The genuine answer is that we don’t know,’ he said.

‘But that’s nothing new. Jed always takes time away from it. I think what I would say, the two things I would say, is that the idea that I would never work with all the guys again together would be heartbreaking.

‘But also with everything that’s just gone on this week, I think everybody, including the audience, needs a bit of time away from it. So we’ll see.’

Regardless, Line of Duty closed with a finale that became the most watched episode from a TV drama in the 21st century.

BBC Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore said she was excited to discuss Line of Duty’s future with its creator Jed Mercurio.

‘Addictive event television, Line of Duty has kept the nation guessing for the last seven weeks, so it’s no surprise that last night’s jaw dropping finale set a ratings record,’ she said.

‘Jed Mercurio is a master of his craft, and I would like to congratulate him and the entire cast and crew for delivering such an incredible drama series.

‘I’m looking forward to having a conversation with the team about where we go next and what the future of the series might be.’

Line of Duty is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
