Robert Downey Jr has revealed he unsuccessfully auditioned for a role in Nancy Meyers’ 2006 festive classic The Holiday.

The 58-year-old Iron Man actor – who dropped the bombshell in a recent interview – was up for the role of Graham, who was eventually played by Jude Law.

The reason why he failed to land the gig? His dodgy English accent.

Robert made the reveal when speaking to Howard Stern alongside Jimmy Fallon, and as it turns out, Jimmy, 48, also auditioned for a character in the Christmas movie.

The chat show host and former SNL star went for the role of Miles, who was portrayed by Jack Black.

Chatting about auditioning for the film that also starred Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, Robert said on The Howard Stern Show: ‘We [him and Jimmy] both got called in just as seat-fillers and we saw each other.

‘Jack Black is getting his part and Jude Law is definitely getting my part, but [Nancy] needed someone to read with the gals, and we’re sitting there going, “It’s about to happen for us”.’

But unfortunately for Robert, his English accent just wasn’t up to scratch.

‘I was like, “I’ve got to have a better English accent than Jude Law at this point,”’ he quipped, adding: ‘And Winslet said, “That was the worst British accent I’ve ever heard”.’

Robert went on: ‘And I was like, “I’ll check out now, but I’m taking the gummy bears from the minibar”.’

While the A-lister’s work didn’t impress Titanic actress Kate, Jimmy said he was blown away by his performance.

‘This is the best actor I’ve ever sat across [from] and did a scene with in my entire life,’ he raved.

‘It was mind-blowing for me, and I quit the business… that was the last time I ever auditioned for a role.’

The project, which ran from 1942 to 1946, produced the first nuclear weapons – they were then used in the bombings of Japanese cities Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Writer-director Christopher always creates high expectations thanks to his previous beloved films like Inception, the Dark Knight trilogy and The Prestige and early reviews have been stellar.
