Tony Bennett’s widow and son share moving statement after legendary singer’s death at 96-Rishma Dosani-Entertainment – Metro

The family of Tony Bennett have opened up about their loss in the wake of his death at the age of 96.

On Friday, it was announced that the legendary musician, who sang Rags to Riches and I Left My Heart in San Francisco, died at his New York home.

Stars around the world rushed to pay tribute, with Sir Elton John, Mariah Carey and Hilary Clinton among those offering their condolences on social media.

Taking to his official Instagram page, the late star’s wife, Susan Benedetto, and their son, Danny Bennett, issued a statement about his death.

‘Thank you to all the fans, friends and colleagues of Tony’s who celebrated his life and humanity and shared their love of him and his musical legacy,’ it read.

‘From his first performances as a singing waiter in Queens to his last performances in 2021 at Radio City Music Hall, Tony delighted in performing the songs he loved and making people happy.

‘And as sad as today has been for all of us we can find joy in Tony’s legacy forever.’

Fans were quick to share their support for the family in the comments section below, reflecting on how much Bennett’s music meant to them.

A follower wrote: ‘We will always miss him but his music, art, and the man are in our hearts forever!’

‘May his memory and his music always be blessings. He was one of a kind, May he be at peace. His musical legacy will continue to bring joy to so many,’ another replied.

‘I am so heartbroken to hear that we’ve lost Tony… It was like a member of our family…,’ one penned. ‘I listen to him all of my life growing up and still to this day… 

‘I love you, Tony, and rest in peace. God bless you and thank you for all of the beautiful music… They’ll never be another Tony [sic].’

An Instagram user said: ‘Sending you all so much love and light. An extraordinary life and person. His legacy will live forever in our hearts.’

As a commenter added: ‘He had a golden voice. We loved him very much. A true legend! The absolute best! Your sorrow is our sorrow! RIP Tony and thx for the music and art.’

Bennett’s cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016.

His publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed the sad news on Friday, explaining that he died just two weeks before his 97th birthday.

‘The beloved singer, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2016, is survived by his wife, Susan Benedetto, his two sons, Danny and Dae Bennett, his daughters Johanna Bennett and Antonia Bennett and nine grandchildren,’ she said in a statement.

‘In later life, when Tony Bennett was asked in interviews how he wanted to be remembered he would often say, “As a nice person”.’
