Microsoft has suddenly made Starfield an Xbox Play Anywhere game, which means you get both the PC and console versions at no extra cost.

You’ll know Starfield has done really well if Microsoft releases sales figures for it, which it never usually does for its games. As while the game will be free from day one on Game Pass, the majority of Xbox owners aren’t subscribers.

That means most will end up buying it as a traditional purchase, particularly those tempted to buy a collector’s edition that allows up to five days early access.

However, everyone will get an extra bonus, not previously hinted at: if you buy the Xbox or PC version you get the other one for free. Plus, cross-save functionality, so you can move your save between the two formats with any problem.

These features are part of the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative, the logo for which has appeared overnight on Starfield’s product page on the Xbox store.

Microsoft hasn’t drawn any attention to it publicly, but fans noticed straight away, since it instantly increases the game’s value for money if you have access to both formats.

The only caveat is that his only applies to digital purchases, so if you buy any of the physical editions you won’t get the other format version automatically.

Starfield is set to launch on September 6 for Xbox Series X/S and PC and will be Bethesda Game Studios’ first new game since Fallout 76, and their first new IP in over 25 years.

It’ll also be released on the same day as Baldur’s Gate 3, which, purely by accident, has ended up as a PlayStation 5 console exclusive.

That’s led to some describing the two games as Baldurfield, as the gaming equivalent of Barbenheimer, although it’s a lot harder to play both games than it is to watch both movies – since you need either multiple consoles or a powerful gaming PC.
