Who Is Tony Ferguson’s Scottish-American Father?

Tony Ferguson will return to action this weekend at UFC 262. He will fight Beneil Dariush in one of the most important fights in his career. Once considered the best lightweight on the planet, Ferguson is currently on a 2-fight skid. He dropped consecutive fights against Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira that put an end to his stellar run.

The loss against ‘The Highlight’ at UFC 249 was heart-breaking in many aspects as ‘El Cucuy’ was expected to finally fight his arch-rival Khabib Nurmagomedov on that card. But a loss meant that the former interim UFC lightweight champion had to work his way back to the top. Nevertheless, after the defeat, the first thing Ferguson did was to address his family.

This speaks volumes about the man that Ferguson is and shows his true character. He cares deeply about his family. Also, he likes to keep his family private and not reveal too much about them in public. So, he doesn’t talk too much about his father either. But here’s everything we know about Ferguson’s dad.

Tony Ferguson- Relationship with his dad

Ferguson’s father is of Scottish-American heritage. That’s where ‘El Cucuy‘ has inherited the surname Ferguson from. Despite not sharing much information about his personal life and family, Ferguson has revealed how his parents, especially his father, had impacted him for good during his childhood.

When I was little, I used to go up and look at the tournament brackets and wonder who I was gonna wrestle next, and my dad says ‘why are you gonna do that? You’re gonna take yourself out of the game. Instead of worrying about what everybody else is doing, worry about what you’re doing.’ So that’s what I did, said Ferguson.

My parents moved me out to Michigan for a reason and that was probably the biggest blessing in the world. “They threw me in sports and I had wonderful coaches that were always there pushing me. The jobs I had were the same thing, pushing and grinding, and if there was rain, sleet, snow, hail, tornadoes, it didn’t matter; you had to go to work. I embrace that,” he said in 2015.

It will be interesting to see if Ferguson is still ‘The Man’ in the UFC’s lightweight division as he fights Dariush this weekend. A win will do good for him and put him back in the title picture, but a loss may leave the 37-year-old in danger of a pink slip.

But with a man of his talent and work ethic, he is capable of defying all the odds in every situation. There’s no doubt he got some great lessons from his father that have built up his iron character.
