Heartstopper’s Joe Locke has admitted he feels a ‘weird guilt’ since the repercussions of being a celebrity have affected his family.

Overnight, Locke, 19, became phenomenally famous when Heartstopper was released to huge acclaim and adoration from fans already besotted by Alice Oseman’s literary series which follows two teen school boys in love.

It’s broken huge records and season 2 is currently number two on Netflix’s global chart. Subsequently many of the cast have gone onto land huge roles elsewhere, including Locke who will be joining the Marvel Universe in Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Over a year into life as a celebrity though, Locke explained to Teen Vogue that he feels as though his career has impacted his loved ones too.

His mother was forced to change her social media accounts when fans tried to track her location while others even called his grandmother.

‘It’s a mutual thing. I need to learn my boundaries and people need to learn their boundaries,’ he said.

‘Most attention comes from a really good place, and I hope I always appreciate that.’

He added: ‘I think people need to understand that privacy is non-negotiable.’

Locke’s co-star Kit Connor, 19, who plays his love interest Nick, was ‘forced’ to come out as bisexual on social media after being hounded by fans who accuse him of ‘queerbaiting’, assuming he wasn’t LGBTQ+.

He also said he felt pressured to ‘beef up’ after fans compared his physique to the Charlie depicted in the books.

Heartstopper returned for season two earlier this month and has landed a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes while creator Alice Oseman spilled all the tea on season 3 to Metro.

Heartstopper is available to stream on Netflix now.
