Cheryl Hole has hit back at abhorrent responses to her upcoming appearance on Celebrity MasterChef.

The Drag Race star, 29, is among the stars on the Celebrity MasterChef line-up hoping to impress judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode, competing against popstar Jamelia, Go Compare star Wynne Evans, musician Locksmith and model Sam Fox.

Cheryl – real name Luke Underwood-Bleach – is quite simply entering a cooking competition but that alone is enough for bigots to make vile remarks on social media, which Metro has decided not to repeat or provide a platform to.

Thankfully, the performer is made of thick skin and responded accordingly to criticism which is, among many things, just really sad and weird.

‘Sitting here chuckling at all these replies of people getting angry for me cooking a bit of food,’ she wrote, before immediately being inundated with support.

‘These people are just exhausting! Pay them no mind,’ replied one fan while so many others echoed the same sentiment.

Cheryl actually highlighted how increasingly vital it is for LGBTQ+ representation on a show like Celebrity MasterChef, particularly given the stabbing of two gay men outside a nightclub in Clapham this week.

‘I mean we’re in a day and age where I feel like the movement is going a bit backwards, there’s more hate crimes,’ she told BBC.

‘We’ve just had an attack on LGBTQ+ community in Clapham the other day.

‘I don’t understand what’s happening in the world and to have representation for our community, to have voices and stories heard, shows we are nothing to be feared.

‘We’re light, laughter and entertainment. We’re just here for a good time and to make sure everyone is looked after.’

She added: ‘We’re just individuals wanting to live our lives and doing no harm and causing no grievances to anybody, so I don’t understand why people take such an issue to us as a community.’

Celebrity MasterChef continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
