While it’s supposed to be a digital-only game there is an official physical version of Baldur’s Gate 3, but only in one country.

Any PlayStation 5 owners suffering from FOMO following the launch of Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t have to wait much longer to play it themselves. However, there was some disappointment when it was revealed that, just like the PC version, it’d still be a digital-only game on PlayStation 5.

It turns out that’s no longer the case… sort of. Baldur’s Gate 3’s PlayStation 5 version will launch physically later in the year, but not everywhere.

It turns out it’s a Japanese exclusive, which means anyone who prefers physically owning their video games will need to pay extra for import fees.

No exact release date has been given, but Spike Chunsoft, which has a history of bringing Western made games to Japan, will be publishing it rather than Larian Studios.

Since the PlayStation 5 isn’t subjected to region locking, an imported Japanese version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will work fine on a UK console. Plus, all the voice acting is in English, so you don’t have to worry about a language barrier.

Given Japan’s stricter censorship laws, though, don’t be surprised if several details, such as the violence and nudity, are modified or cut entirely.

While some fans already plan on importing through Playasia and the like, others aren’t thrilled that this is the only way they can own Baldur’s Gate 3 physically.

This isn’t an issue exclusive to Baldur’s Gate 3, either. Sega fans are similarly disgruntled that the upcoming Like A Dragon: Gaiden will launch physically in Japan but only digitally in the West.

It remains to be seen whether Japan will see a physical release for Baldur’s Gate 3’s Xbox version too. After all, Larian Studios is still trying to get it working on Xbox Series S, which is no doubt why it probably won’t be out till 2024.

If you aren’t bothered about how you get to play Baldur’s Gate 3 on PlayStation 5, just remember that it’ll launch in the West on September 6, but as a digital-only game.
