Sir Elton John has led tributes to Jimmy Buffett following the singer’s death aged 76.

He described the Margaritaville legend as a ‘treasured entertainer’ after news of his death was confirmed on Saturday (September 2).

A statement shared by Buffett’s loved ones on social media confirmed he died with friends and family by his side the previous night.

It read: ‘Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs.

‘He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.’

Tributes have since flooded the internet, with Sir Elton, 76, sharing a sweet message to his Instagram Story.

The Your Song hitmaker wrote: ‘Jimmy Buffett was a unique and treasured entertainer. His fans adored him and he never let them down.

‘This is the saddest of news. A lovely man gone way too soon. Condolences to (his wife) Jane and the family from (my husband) David (Furnish) and me.’

The late star is survived by his second wife, Jane Slagsvol, and three children: Savannah, Sarah and Cameron.

Joining the tributes, talk show host Andy Cohen tweeted alongside a photo of Buffett: ‘The king of cool… paradise was wherever Jimmy Buffett was’.

American surfer Kelly Slater commented on Instagram: ‘What a guy! Love you, Jimmy. “Fins up”, as you always say.’

‘Thank you Jimmy. Thank you for what you did for all of us. You changed the way I love life. And I’m forever grateful’, wrote one fan sweetly.

‘Jimmy, I don’t know what to say. You brought so much buoyancy to life where we all needed it most’, penned another.

‘I hope he’s up there having a cheeseburger in paradise’, one added.

Buffett enjoyed a successful decades-long career in the music industry.

Margaritaville was undoubtedly his most famous hit, with other tunes including Come Monday and Cheeseburger in Paradise. However, his discography consists of a whopping 29 studio albums.

Buffett, who performed alongside his band Coral Reefer Band, also released songs such as A Pirate Looks at Forty and Volcano.

Aside from his stellar music career, Buffett took many different avenues with his career, building himself up to become an established businessman worth millions.

He was a best-selling author, and had two restaurant chains named after two of his biggest songs.
