Regé-Jean Page has cemented his status as the next big thing in entertainment as he just won a 2021 MTV Movie & TV Award for Breakthrough Performance for his role in Bridgerton.

Page immediately became an overnight phenomenon as Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, with viewers instantly fawning over him when the hit Netflix show dropped on Boxing Day last year.

Taking place on Sunday, May 16, the 31-year-old took home the MTV award for his role as Simon on the first season of the hit Netflix show.

The actor accepted the award via satellite, thanking the cast and crew for all of their hard work on the hit period drama.

‘Wow, thank you for this remarkably heavy award. It has been a remarkable year for everyone,’ Page said during his speech.

‘I know that everyone who works on Bridgerton worked incredibly hard to give audiences stories and shows that we could just feel good about, and not just because that’s incredibly valuable — that’s so important [and] it has been for me the last year. We wanted everyone to know they deserve love stories.’

He continued: ‘They deserved happily ever afters, no matter who they are. No matter where they’re from. No matter when they’re from. Awards like this, voted for by you, let us know that you took those stories close to your hearts. Thank you.

Speaking about the trophy, Page said he ‘will hold this close to my heart’.

Page had some stiff competition, as he was against the likes of Paul Mescal (Normal People), Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia), Ashley Park (Emily in Paris) and Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm).

Unfortunately, he won’t be back for Bridgerton series two, despite arguably becoming the show’s biggest breakout star.

The series has also already been commissioned for seasons three and four but Page won’t appear in any of those episodes either.

Page previously told Variety his character was always supposed to have a ‘one-season arc,’ so as to line up with the Julia Quinn book series, which the show is based on.

You can stream Bridgerton series 1 on Netflix.
