With the clay-court season on its last legs, the focus has started to shift towards the grass-court swing, in particular, the Wimbledon Championships 2021.

The organizers of the prestigious Grand Slam event had recently met to decide on the quarantine protocols for the tournament, which will be held at a time when parts of England are still battling surges in COVID-19 infections.

However, amid rumors that the players would be subjected to hard quarantine and stay confined in a bubble during the length of the tournament, it seems like there could be better news in the offing on the spectator front.

It now appears that the All England Club, which hosts the Slam, is confident that the tournament this year would see more crowds than the current limit of 25%.

French Open likely to allow bigger crowds, Wimbledon might follow suit

The French Open, which was delayed by a week to allow more crowds for matches, is likely to see spectators numbering in excess of 5,000 every day, and the number could increase to 13,000 by the second week of the tournament.

It now seems that the organizers of Wimbledon would tread a similar line by raising the cap on crowd limit for the tournament.

However, there’s still no clarity on the ticketing front as the Club hasn’t dropped a hint on when the tickets are likely to go on sale. Word is that the organizers would leave the ticketing details till as late as possible, giving themselves more time in the hope that the pandemic situation in the country would improve further.

Irrespective of how strict the protocol eventually turns out to be, the tournament, like previous years, would attract the best and brightest from men’s and women’s tennis.

Roger Federer, Serena Williams eyeing Wimbledon glory

The Grand Slam, this year, assumes great significance for eight-time champion Roger Federer and seven-time winner Serena Williams.

Federer, on his part, has already identified Wimbledon as one of his priority events this year.

Though he will return to the French Open this year, the goal is to find his vintage form and, hopefully, get some wins under his belt before traveling to All England.

For many, including nine-time champion Martina Navratilova, Wimbledon presents the best chance for Serena to finally end her title drought in Grand Slams.

Though she will travel to Roland-Garros after her disappointing semi-final exit at this year’s Australian Open, Navratilova, during a live broadcast of the Italian Open, reckoned that grass would be the ideal surface for the champion to lift her 24th career Grand Slam title.
