Vic Reeves has unveiled the most epic photoshoot to launch a gardening competition with B&Q, joyfully hugging a marrow in a bed of flowers.

The comedian and artist, 62, who now goes by his real name of Jim Moir, has teamed up with B&Q’s Gardener of the Year competition to award one green-fingered home gardener £10,000.

Jim, who hosts Netflix’s The Big Flower Fight, also posed on a throne of brightly coloured flowers as part of the imagery released to start the competition.

He will judge the contest to find the UK’s best gardener along with experts from the Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) with the winner being announced at the end of June.

The winner will receive £10,000 in cash for their efforts, as well as a B&Q plants for life card and a golden trowel award to display.

With many people focusing on beautifying their own outdoor spaces during the pandemic – and with the Chelsea Flower Show postponed until September – there are bound to be many impressive lockdown gardeners out there this year, with categories ranging from window boxes to allotments.

Jim revealed what he is looking for in the entries: ‘First of all, I’ll look for things that are pretty! And then I’ll look for things that are unusual.

‘The main thing for me is new ideas, so if someone’s done something I’ve not seen before that’s going to be a winner for me.’

He also previously told Metro.co.uk about how much he loves working on The Big Flower Fight with Netflix, calling it the ‘best job ever’.

Jim revealed: ‘When I first heard of it, I thought it was a flower arranging show but it’s about the art aspect of it over. It’s incredible. They’re really big massive things.’

B&Q’s Gardener of the Year Award is open for amateur gardeners across the UK until June 18.
