Rockstar Games has finally said something official about GTA 6… not in public but via a patent for an ambitious new animation technology.

October only has two days left now and it’s pretty unlikely that Rockstar is going to unveil GTA 6 so close to Halloween, despite fan hopes that this would be the month.

You never know, but if the disappointment continues there is at least some news today, in the form of a newly discovered patent for ‘locomotive technology’ that allows for much more realistic animation than any of the previous games.

The system seems to work by chaining together several ‘blocks’ of animations at once, so it’s not just one canned animation (something Rockstar is infamous for) but something that’s unique every time and which can be easily interrupted.

Although it’s often the case that patents are never used, examination of the code from the GTA 6 hacks seems to show the new system in action, with animations referring to multiple different blocks controlling a single movement, with names like ‘crouch, ‘left_wide’, and ‘underfire’.

While there’s no guarantee that anything from the hack will be used in the final game this does seem to be proof that, at one point at least, the new animation technology was being used in GTA 6.

The patent was first noticed by Tobbelobben30 on Reddit, who claims that you can also see police in the GTA 6 leaked footage using the technology.

He also suggests that Red Dead Redemption 2 is probably already using an early version of the concept, and yet that game was criticised for the fact that while its animation was very realistic it often got in the way of the gameplay and slowed down movement.

In other GTA related news today, former Rockstar developer Tony Gowland, who just released indie game Dungeon Golf, has spoken about how upset the team were at the GTA 6 leaks.

He didn’t offer any new insights on the game, for obvious reasons, but did suggest that he personally would prefer to see a smaller but more detailed game world.

‘In terms of what I’m hoping for, I personally would like it to bring in a little bit in terms of size of the world. I think a smaller but more densely packed location would maybe bring back some of that memorable navigation that I loved from the original,’ he told PC GamerN.

It’s unlikely that’s the direction Rockstar is taking but until they release some official information, and that first trailer, we won’t know for sure.
