How the ‘00s saucy whale-tail is back & why stars from Mary Earp to Molly Mae are making the controversial trend chic

WITH ‘quiet luxury’ being everywhere on social media, you’d think that celebs would want a similarly sophisticated look.

Despite this, many are loving a cheeky noughties trend and it is leaving little to the imagination.

If you aren’t a follower of fashion, a whale tail is when you show off your g-string or thong by pulling them up over your hips.

This gives the classic fin shape, which stars from Britney to Paris Hilton were rocking on the 00s red carpets – and the trend is now making a splash for a second time with these show stopping stars….

MARY EARP

With so much going on over the festive period, you might not have seen the England player’s nod to the trend at BBC’s Sports Personality of The Year Awards.

However, the Manchester United played had a cheeky nod to the trend as her David Koma gown had built in high rise knickers.

Featuring black lace and a faux corset, the £1460 gown was a show stopper piece – literally!

The 30-year-old isn’t the only Brit who has been loving the saucy style though.

CHLOE MADELEY

Amid her divorce from rugby player James Haskell, Chloe Madeley has also been barring all.

Unlike the England star though, Chloe wore her whale tail on a night with her black underwear visible through her stunning her lace bodysuit.

The personal trainer decided to skip leg day for a night out with the girls instead, adding an elegant low bun and high heels to her look last month.

FLORENCE PUGH

Never one to shy away from daring fashion, Florence Pugh wore a whale tail during an event for Paris Fashion Week.

Stunning in a sheer skirt by Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, complete with crystal embellishment.

DUA LIPA

Like Mary Earp and Chloe Madeley, the pop sensation also wore sheer black to show off this saucy trend.

Appearing a Milan Fashion Week back in February, Dua Lipa wore a stunning lace dress-jumpsuit with her signature straight locks and smoky eye make up.

In fact, the ‘Leviating’ singer is so in love with the whale tail trend that she included embellished versions in her collaboration with Versace.

RITA ORA

Whilst barring all is nothing new, Rita Ora shocked fans by rocking a whale tail at the Fashion Awards last year.

Despite the plunging temperature, the Anywhere singer stepped out in a red hot sheer crimson dress by designer Nensi Dojaka.

Worth over £2,000, the singer also teamed the stunning gown with a matching bra and thong – which skimmed her toned stomach.

If she wasn’t already ethereal enough, Ora added prosthetic fins on her face for a truly out of the this world look.

MOLLY-MAE HAGUE

Having spent an entire summer in the iconic villa, many Love Islanders are also keen to get on board with the sexy trend.

Unlike others featured on our list, the Islanders have gone for a more low key vibe though.

Style queen Molly Mae has also picked up on the trend, wearing a sultry white bikini and low rise trousers on a trip to Mexico last year.

Whilst it is unclear whether the bikini was from her PrettyLittleThing collection, the stunning suit was hitched up as the mum-of-one indulged in the cheeky trend.

MAURA HIGGINS

Fellow Love Islander Maura Higgins even paired the saucy trend with another daring fashion: the underboob.

With her washboard abs and incredible tan also on display, we couldn’t keep our eyes off the screen – just like when she was in the villa.

KENDALL JENNER

The saucy trend has even made it across the pond, with model Kendall Jenner wearing a whale tail to the 202023 MET Gala afterparty.

Layering it over a shimmering Nensi Dojaka bodysuit, the reality star pull her thong over the already tiny hemline.

KYLIE JENNER

They aren’t the only Kardashian in love with the trend this year, with Kylie Jenner also enjoying the whale tail trend.

Showing those famous curves, the reality star wore a tiny green low rise skirt and matching thong whilst on holiday in February.

The mum-of-two also added another underwear as outwear trend, with her sheer black shirt showing off her bra as she had fun in the sun.

JULIA FOX

Julia Fox was also spotted wearing a whale tail back in October, as she braved freezing temperature in New York.

Much like fellow model Kendall Jenner, she reinvented the trend by wearing the smocked underwear over her cropped trousers.

Pairing it with a tiny white bandeau, ski high platform heels and matching girly accessories the fashionista ruffled a few feathers with this daring look.

It proves fashion has no limited, even in plummeting temperatures.

KIM K

Always ahead of the curve, Kim Kardashian has already revealed she is a fan of the fashion trend and debuted her whale tail back in 2018.

The reality star wore a vintage G string from Gucci, with the iconic double G resting at the base of her back in a racy Instagram post.

It seems sex really does sell though, as even with the underwear being nearly three decades old the couture piece still sell for over $1400 (£1100) – secondhand!

BRITNEY SPEARS

Though you might associate it the fashion trend with the noughties, – it’s actually much older and dates back to 1930’s burlesque.

Decades later, designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s 1997 Spring/Summer collection would be similarly sexy with exposed thongs and underwear.

Sadly, it wasn’t until the noughties though when the whale tail finally made a splash after Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera and Britney were all photographed with their underwear on show.

In fact, the Princess of Pop was one of the first women to make the whale tail popular, wearing the fashion statement as early as 2001.

With the nude knickers complimenting her tanned skin, it’s easy to see why the trend caught on.

With sales of low rise jeans peaking once again, it seems everyone is adopting the whale tail now.

The trend is already appearing on the high street, with Tiktoker @izzipoopi showing off her in a daringly sheer Tory Burch dress.

For those who still aren’t convinced that the whale tail is back, designer brand Mui Mui has just debuted £3,570 crystal briefs on the catwalk – as worn by The Crown’s Emma Corrin.

With the trouser-less trend and kinkwear also appearing on the runway, it seems the whale tail is here to stay.

Whilst underwear and outwear might be fashion goals, what does our in-house fashion editor Clemmie Fieldsend think.
